About The Brit

The Brit Pub Cwmavon, Port Talbot

Welcome to The Brit Pub. Our story starts on St David’s Day in 2014 when we first got the keys to this historic building. After the arduous task of renovating the building which was 8 months of hard, dirty, exhausting work we opened our doors to our first customers. We knew the people of Port Talbot and Cwmavon would love it here just as much as we did as we had plans to bring to the area things that certainly weren’t the norm. With quirky decor, home made food, a choice of 5 Real Ales, a gin menu and even afternoon teas. Believe it or not these things were once unheard of in this area.

It has taken us a couple of years to find our feet and build up a great reputation and we now have as well as our local customers, visitors from far and wide. (We are very friendly and chatty here and like to know where people are from). We’ve had visitors from Cardiff, Llanelli, Mumbles and even as far as Bristol simply to try our food. Grateful for the response we know that none of this would be possible without our amazing team of staff. Some who have been here since we opened.

At the core of our ethos is the desire to create a proper pub where our customers can meet for a drink and enjoy the old fashioned art of talking. No televisions, fruit machines or banging music to distract them. Good home cooked food and the type of friendly service you would normally only expect from other family members. Because we believe this is what customers are looking for and brings them back time and time again.

The Decor

We’ve taken great care to retain the character and charm of what was once The Britannia but known locally as “The Bottom Brit”. (There was once a pub called The British Lion at the top end of the village which is sadly now closed, aka “The Top Brit”). We set about exposing old fireplaces and beautiful flag stone floors whilst adding a few of our own quirky features. The piece of railway holding up the ceiling in our restaurant was produced here in Cwmavon in 1851 and shown at The Great Exhibition of Crystal Palace where it won a bronze medal.

Most of the furniture has been “upcycled” giving it a new lease of life. And we’ve transformed inanimate objects into everyday usable items. For those that have already visited you’ve probably seen our glamorous “lady lamp” If you haven’t then you will have to come and see for yourselves. Even our beautiful bar has been fashioned from the old floorboards and doors that we had to remove during the renovation. The look here is a little Victoriana, a little Steampunk, glamorous and rustic. Basically a real eclectic mix. But as you will see when you visit it’s also very homely with a cosy atmosphere.

The Brit Pub is a Pub for all Seasons and we think you’ll agree this is certainly true. In the Winter months you can relax by our log burner fire with a glass of Mulled wine. And in the Summer months sit in the garden by the river with a nice cold Cider. Come and find out all about The Brit and we know you won’t want to leave.
